TAKES A HEAD TRIP
LIGHTBORNE BRINGS “PLANET PHILLY” TO LIFE
The city of Philadelphia is transformed into an
animated wonderland in a new spot from
the designers at Lightborne. It visualizes the
landscape of Philly.com, the top-rated website
for The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News,
which recently revamped its look with the aid of ad agency Gyro Worldwide.
Lightborne based their animation off of Gyro’s design theme, utilizing the website’s color palette
of red and beige to bring various Philadelphia landmarks and icons to life. Silhouettes populate
the streets, speaking in comment bubbles that represent the commentary and interactivity that
occurs on the website. Combining programs such as After Effects and Photoshop with handdrawn
animation, Lightborne’s visual style evokes the diversity of Philly culture and events.
One of the miracles made
possible by visual effects is the
ability to place an actor or object in
an environment where it could never
exist in real life. A new commercial for The
Getty Centre of Los Angeles provides an eyepopping
example of this ability.

Armed with a digital

images from the Getty

Sleeper Films were able
to superimpose priceless
works of art on the heads
of various Los Angelenos.
Under the supervision of
Creative Director Jerry
Spivack, the effects team
used 2D compositing, 3D
tracking, modeling, lighting
and animation to lend the
images a striking authenticity.
According to this spot, great
art is worth losing your head
over.

In the campaign’s first spot, entitled
“Escalator,” a female investor emerges
from the flowing data of a financial
page. She navigates her way through
a formidable economic terrain created with text and
shapes from the Earnings pages of The Wall Street Journal.
A narrator invites investors to follow the “proven principles”
of OppenheimerFunds, as the woman boards a jagged
escalator symbolizing the market’s ups and downs.
