As I write this, it is a rainy Wednesday afternoon, and
I, too, am under the weather. I am at home putting
the finishing touches on the issue before it goes to
print and watching season four of “The Office” on
DVD, and pondering the brilliance that will become
this issue’s “Leading Off” column.
So many things to write about, but so little space!
Tonight is the third presidential debate between
Senators Obama and McCain, and though I’m not
the most political of people, I’m pretty jazzed about
this year’s election. Of course, by the time this issue
comes out, the debating will be long over and
we will be two weeks away from voting. Actually,
according to a website I just found, we are 19 days,
17 hours, 56 minutes and 44 seconds away from
voting! 32 seconds...26 seconds...19...14...10...
The 44th Annual Chicago International Film Festival also kicks off this week - two
full weeks of shorts, features, panels, parties and other film-related events. This
year, 14 films make up the “Spotlight on Illinois” festival segment, which showcases
the talent of filmmakers whose roots are grounded in the state and who chose
to use all that Illinois has to offer to create their works. Some highlights include
Chris Olsen’s short film “Butterfly,” which we highlight in this issue, Joe Swanberg’s
“Nights and Weekends” (look for our interview with Swanberg in a coming issue!)
and Carl Seaton’s “Of Boys and Men,” which stars Robert Townsend and Angela
Bassett.
This issue is involved heavily in the agency side of the industry, and features
include an agency client report, an update on Chicago-based interactive
agency Avenue A / Razorfish and a Q&A with Kansas City-based Sullivan Higdon
& Sink.
So enjoy the new issue, have fun at the film festival and happy voting...in 19 days,
17 hours, 7 minutes and 45 seconds!
