Show Me What You’re Workin’ With
RED Night At Hootenanny
Hootenanny, a Chicago-based editorial boutique,
hosted an informational meeting for clients in late
August centering on the RED camera. FxPHD cofounder
Mike Seymour was in town from Australia
and addressed the crowd in a “what you need to
know” seminar. Having owned RED camera #22
since early last year and tested it under strenuous
conditions, Seymour was an excellent resource
on the strengths and weaknesses of shooting with
RED.

The crowd was briefed on everything from myths about
the price of the camera to how the enhanced image can
benefit the clients’ end product. The Hootenanny staff
chimed in on its experience with the RED workflow on a
recent Leo Burnett project.
“We had a very tight timetable on our last RED project,
so it was even more important than ever to involve the
editorial team early in the process to facilitate the shoot,”
stated editor Jerem Sloan. “Once we
ingested the data, the project flowed
beautifully.”
Fletcher Camera provided a RED
camera for the evening, and guests
were shown a Peter Jackson trailer
shot entirely on RED. Hootenanny
producer Don Avila related, “We are
finding [that] more and more clients
want to shoot with this camera, but are
in the dark about how it works. We are
providing the knowledge they need
to get going, and the experience to
take their footage through the post
process.”
