Screen Magazine - Screen Magazine: Vol. 29, Issue 14 - Index

Right now as I write this, it’s a Monday afternoon,
and as of press time, the latest installation to the
“Batman” franchise – “The Dark Knight” – just
made box office history over the weekend,
racking up $155.3 million during the three-day
opening, which has been recorded as the
highest-grossing movie opening in the history
of box office records. This beats “Spider-Man
3,” the last record-breaker, which closed out its
opening weekend at $151.1 million back in May
of 2007. (Thank you, EW.com!)
While it’s all wonderful and fabulous that
Hollywood is able to one-up itself yet again,
this history-making event hits close to home for
filmmakers and production crew in Chicago, as
“The Dark Knight” was shot last summer in our
fair city. According to a press release issued by
Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, production
on “The Dark Knight” brought in almost $40 million for the city of Chicago – more
than any other film that has ever been shot here.
According to the release, filming of “The Dark Knight” created about 4,500 jobs,
which lead to $17.5 million in wages to local actors and crew and $22 million in
sales from the movie to local vendors.
“’The Dark Knight’ is evidence of the success of the Illinois Film Tax Credit,” said
Governor Blagojevich in the release. “The Film Tax Credit put Illinois back on the
film industry’s map and helped Illinois achieve record revenues of $155 million
and over 26,000 job hires in 2007. By renewing the tax credit, we have held on to
our competitive position and are helping to ensure that filmmakers will continue
coming here to make their movies.”
We did run this news story on SCREEN’s website a few weeks ago, but I thought
it was worth mentioning again in print. The success of “The Dark Knight” is pretty
important to industry professionals in Chicago, and is no doubt a testament to all
of the quality goods and services, beautiful and diverse scenery and hard work
that is available on this “third coast.”
