Local Chicago Filmmakers Create “Big Budget” Film Without The Big Budget,
All With The Help Of Social Networking Sites, New HD Technology And Sweat Equity
Thomas Sibley and Luigi Scarcelli, two Chicago filmmakers
who comprise Optimist Pictures, have avoided the usual
industry snares of financing, loss of creativity and distribution
by simply becoming a production house of their own.
Using social networking sites such as Craigslist, the
filmmakers circumvented expensive casting agencies to
find a formidable array of local acting talent. In the finest
tradition of “run and gun” cinematography, they waged
a cinematic guerilla war on the streets of Chicago and in
the wilds of New York. They were also assisted by the latest
advances in high definition cameras and editing, achieving
a production
quality which
was, until recently,
only in the realm
of imagination for
indie producers.
Now exploring
internet, cell
phone and
portable game
distribution strategies, Optimist Pictures intends to release its
first feature, “The Lower Circle,” a sci-fi political horror film,
to the digital masses.
A modern adaptation of Dante’s “Inferno,” the film is based
on the Infernal Circles of Lust, Gluttony and Violence,
personified by a lecherous 19th century priest, a polluting
Texan industrialist and a sadistic Secretary of Defense, it is a
guided tour though Hell based on the modern world.
While they may never take on the 800 pound gorilla that
is Hollywood, Optimist Pictures shows that it is now possible
to create an effects-loaded feature-length film with little
money and even less “juice.”
