The American Federation of Television
& Radio Artists (AFTRA) struck a
tentative deal with the Alliance of
Motion Picture and Television Producers
(AMPTP) on a three-year primetime
television contract avoiding a strike
later this month. As of press time, the
Screen Actors Guild (SAG) was still
negotiating with the AMPTP to gain a
new contract as well all in an effort to
avoid a strike and a potential calamity
in the production industry.
Many insiders feel that a deal is likely to
take place which will put to rest talk of a
work stoppage and allow the industry to
press forward in a weakened economy.
With gas prices rising to ridiculous rates,
the silver lining may be that more
Americans are forced to stay home
more often, which could mean higher
than normal television ratings and, of
course, more production of quality
programming and commercials.

Production in the Midwest is ready for
a spike with recent incentives put in
place to attract work led by Michigan’s
40 percent rebate and Wisconsin’s 25
percent tax credit. The Illinois Production
Alliance (IPA) worked closely with state
government officials to successfully
renew its popular tax credit.
Illinois Film Office director Betsy
Steinberg said, “The film tax credit has
been a great success for the state of
Illinois and we are happy to announce
its renewal. The tax credit allows Illinois
to remain competitive and ensure
that filmmakers choose to make their
movies in Illinois which, in turn, brings
thousands of jobs and millions of dollars
in revenue to our state.”
Although it appears all the stars are
lined up for a big year, many won’t
see an uptick until late summer due
to the fact that so much work was
done earlier in the year anticipating
a SAG/AFTRA strike. 2008 thus far has
been a roller coaster but the ride may
be leveling out steadying the nerves of
many executives in the creative world.
In this issue we cover Allied Vaughn’s
new “on demand” service as this
company, too, changes with the needs
of the community to stay ahead of the
technology curve. Enjoy!
