Singing A New Song For Summer By Robert Leach and Amy Wilschke
5 Alarm Music Offers
New Search & Rescue
5 Alarm Music, a leader in custom and
production music for the television,
film, radio and advertising industries is
the largest independent music library
in the nation. The key to any company
who reaches the top of the pile is
staying there, and with the company’s
new login-based “Search & Rescue”
Web portal it appears 5 Alarm Music is
doing just that.
The company worked closely with
Toronto-based company Soundminer
Inc. to develop an innovative Webbased
solution, dubbed “Search &
Rescue,” in keeping with 5 Alarm
Music’s brand motif and refurbishedfirehouse
headquarters.
Through Search & Rescue, 5 Alarm Music
offers 100,000 tracks from more than
40 different libraries, including original
music from top composers designed
specifically for films, television advertising,
games and other productions that call
for music usage. The 5 Alarm library has
provided tunes for some of Hollywood’s
biggest productions, including TV’s
“Desperate Housewives,” “Friday Night
Lights,” Cashmere Mafia” and such
recent films as “The Other Boleyn Girl”
and “College Road Trip.”
As part of the new delivery system,
5 Alarm clients will have complete
access to the company’s music libraries,
and will be able to instantly manage,
control and download digital assets
including .MP3, .WAV and .AIF files. Files
accessed via the new client site will take
advantage of a speedy search engine
and automatically include embedded
metadata in every downloaded copy,
so important details of a file stay with
the end user throughout the workflow.
The Search & Rescue system also allows
the creation of cue sheets for usage
reporting at the click of the mouse,
using created playlists.
“Our Search & Rescue web portal

has changed our business model and
consequently we do not press as many
CDs as we have in the past because
many of our customers are more
comfortable using our online search
engine,” states Cassie Lord, Executive
Producer/General Manager of 5 Alarm.
“I think customers appreciate the ease
of use we offer online and the search
capabilities which simplify the entire
process. I started in this business in 1983
and went on my first business sales trip
with albums in hand. I would have to
play the album and narrate as each
track was being played. It was not
uncommon for us to lend our customers
1/4” tapes when they chose a particular
track and they would mail them back
upon completion. Times have changed
obviously and we continue to change
with the technology from the early
album days through CDs and now
computer drives and online.”
Using the software online was easy
even for an unskilled journalist and
according to Lord, “We are able to
provide customers with tailored
solutions for their music needs.”

Audio Producers Group Moves On Up!
As of April 28, 2008, Audio Producers
Group (APG) moved its facility to
200 N. Dearborn from its last location
inside the Leo Burnett Building at 35 W.
Wacker Dr. The move enables APG to
give its clients the kind of atmosphere
that the staff has wanted to provide for
a long time. With a view of Millennium
Park from the balcony, clients can take
a respite from their daily stresses and
relax while confident that their audio
needs are being met by award-winning
sound designer Peter Erazmus.
APG’s new studio will have all the
amenities its clients are used to, plus the
addition of a full kitchen. APG owners
Mindy Verson and David Kaplan feel
that moving the studio now is the right
move at the right time. “We would like
to keep the relationships we’ve worked
so long to nourish with Burnett creatives,
but we’d also like to grow and expand
our client base. This was difficult being
inside of the Burnett building,” said
