There is no shortage of doom and
gloom reports about the U.S. economy
circulating news wires and nightly
news broadcasts. $4.00 a gallon for
gas, home foreclosures and property
values generally on the decline, food
commodity prices soaring and a wide
spread feeling of “blah” have many
people in the industry holding their
collective breath.
Late last month, however, Viacom
announced that its first-quarter
revenues jumped 15 percent to $3.12
billion with double-digit growth in
several areas of the company, including
the Filmed Entertainment Division. The
bottom line is Viacom’s net earnings
were reported to be $270 million, up 33
percent from one year ago.
Walt Disney broadcast and cable
networks reported that net operating

income for each were up $223 million
– 17 percent – and $1.1 billion – 14
percent – from a year ago. For all of
its media networks combined, the
company reports the revenue grew
five percent to $3.6 billion.
Are we in a recession or a progression in
the production industry? Based on the
numbers coming in and conversations
with several industry professionals it
would not appear that our industry is
slowing down at all.
I think at this point we can exhale. Of
course, I am not an economist – nor
very good at picking stocks – but that’s
beside the point. It may be just another
lull in an otherwise dismal economy.
On the cover of this issue we focus on
Show Department’s (who incidentally
own The Screen Works and Resolution
Digital Studios, as well) 25 years in
business. Sitting down with the partners,
who made this company a reality and
continue its evolution to bring their story
to you, our readers, was informative.
The next 25 years will be amazing for
this team and, of course, we at SCREEN
hope to cover them every step of the
way.
Enjoy!
