The show was called “King B’s Raw Fusion.” It
started out with me commenting on a variety
of things and playing music videos. I was the
talent and I was also the crew. I set up my 600
dollar, one chip, hi-8 camera on the 20 dollar
tripod that I bought from a chain store and then
jumped in front of the camera ready to host
the show.
Soon I added hot topics, questions, interviews
and a couple of volunteer crew people that
didn’t know much more than I did about
TV production but could hold the camera
moderately straight. Once I got my weekly time
slot on cable access, I added the soap opera
“Temptations” as a segment.
Things were going great. Then some of the
administration at cable access tried to pull their
shit with me.
One of the biggest differences, I have observed,
between the politics of the coasts and ours here
in the Midwest is that the industry people on
the coasts are willing to work with each other
even if they hate each other. Here, “industry
people” hate on each other and play stupid
games, which eventually ends with us not
working together.
Anyway, those inferior minded people at
access showed their hand and without going
into what it was, just know that I showed them
my hand. It wasn’t my fault that my middle finger
was the only finger that decided to wave.
I told them to air the rest of the season (I only
did that because I had told the fans I would) and
then I told the access people to pull the show.
They did just as I told them to do.
I wasn’t worried. While I was still at cable
access I noticed a channel on cable that was
devoted to playing infomercials. I figured if I
bought time on that channel I could sell time
to advertisers.
After calling several people and getting the
runaround repeatedly I got through to the
person who would sell me time on cable channel
26 in Chicago for $425 per half-hour. My
advertisers were mostly local businesses who
were probably making more of an investment in
my enthusiasm than really believing they would
see a huge return from their advertising.
That kept me in the game for a little while. I
knew I would soon have to make a change but
not even I had foreseen the change that was
to come.
