And Jeremy Russell
tight films (Los Angeles) has signed
directors Danny T and Jeremy Russell
for exclusive US spot representation.
Buoyed by his work in commercials
(Nike, Coca Cola) and online, Danny
T (aka, Dan Trachtenberg) is currently
developing projects with Touchstone,
Disney and 20th Century Fox. At press
time, he had been awarded his first
assignment at tight, an alternate
reality game for an upcoming feature
film, with EMMY-winning creator Matt
Wolf and Double Twenty Productions.
“Danny’s creative sensibility and
enthusiasm make him a perfect
fit for tight, and for the business of
advertising as a whole,” says Don
Block, who presides over tight with
fellow executive producer Rich
Carter.
Jeremy Russell, an alum of
Group101Spots (now SpotLab), has
helmed campaigns for Branson,
Missouri Tourism and the University of
Texas. His reel also includes spots for
Gibson, Kennedy Space Center, Trek,
Yes Network and Platformbreath.org.
RSG “Hands,” which Russell directed
for Arnold Worldwide McLean/DC,
was recently honored an ADDY
award in the Best of Broadcast
category. According to Carter, “We
really responded equally well to
Jeremy’s work and his personality. His
reel is fresh, while showing a level of
maturity one doesn’t often find in a
young director.”

Underscore, Not Underground
By Erik Walter

You know when you watch a silent film and, while you respect
its artistic integrity, you can’t help but feel cheated because you can’t “feel” it?
Now imagine that you are sitting on the couch watching the premiere of
“Farmer Wants a Wife,” when suddenly the commercial for that new knick-knack
you wanted comes on without sound, and you become entirely disenchanted
and decide to spend your hard-earned money on a new Pez dispenser.
Well, as horrifying as that sounds, that’s
what Underscore Music’s Joel Corelitz
doesn’t want to happen.
Founded in 2006, Underscore Music is
the brainchild of Corelitz, a seven-year
composing veteran who simply wanted
to revamp the traditional music house
and the standard that others have
become too comfortable with.
“Underscore operates efficiently by
focusing less on tools no longer needed
to produce high-end audio, and focusing
more on what’s really important: ideas
and talent,” says Corelitz. “It also provides
an antidote to what seems to have
become the standard music house demo
process of throwing countless tracks at
the wall by making more efficient use
of our clients’ time through a creative
process that encourages greater focus
and more collaboration.”
Corelitz, who trained at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, is the sole employee
of Underscore and acts as the composer, producer and creative director, which
saves clients many sleepless nights worrying about their ideas being passed
through countless channels.
Corelitz is incredibly ambitious when it comes to the progression of his art form,
and proves this through the development of Waveplant, a more specialized and
artist-controlled voice. According to Corelitz’s Waveplant site, “A waveplant is
a union between different elements that combine to create a singularity with
hybrid vigor. Rather than keeping strictly with any genre, Waveplant extends this
idea into tracks and scores that share this blend of approach: fresh and forward,
human and resonant.”
“Waveplant came from a desire I had to create a brand that would allow me
to bring all of my music projects together in one place, regardless of length or
medium,” says Corelitz. “Whereas Underscore showcases my work as a generalist,
Waveplant showcases my work as a specialist. Musically applied sound design is
my favorite genre in which to compose. I like it because it pushes the boundaries
of what’s possible with music and sound, and because of its heavy reliance on
technology, it works particularly well with my skill set.
“I think ultimately, I’m most inspired by the core idea, the story – whatever
connects with the listener on a gut level,” Corelitz adds. “It’s so easy these days
to get caught up in all the tools. But they’re really there to help us execute ideas,
not to create them. A flawless execution of a really simple and resonant idea is
what I continually strive for in my work.”
