music calls for 99 percent technology, but obviously some
music must have that simple yet organic human feel and
one must know when and how to blend the two to achieve
the absolute best mood and musical environment for a
particular projects.”
Duncan himself will admit that he is a strange creature
musically. He confesses that he doesn’t listen to the radio,
nor does he buy records but yet he is able to convincingly
create virtually any style of music. Duncan explains, “I feel
that to be truly creative and unique, you have to start with
a clean palette musically in your mind, and my mental
musical palette can never truly be empty if I fill it with
the many things you might hear on the radio, TV or other
places, so I prefer not to listen to music for pleasure. For me
it provides a clean colorless palette as a starting point when
it is time for me to be creative for my clients. I hate being
influenced by what I hear and that is something that will
happen even when you don’t want it to when you listen to a
lot of other music. The only exception to this is when a client
wants me to hear a reference track or song to give me an
idea of the general direction they’d like me to take.
Duncan explains, “When I go to create a new piece, I don’t
do it in segments or one instrument at a time, instead I hear
the entire song or score in my head fully orchestrated and
mixed in my mind the moment I begin to brainstorm for my
client. It only then becomes a matter getting into the studio
and translating or converting what I hear in my mind’s ear
and making it a reality.”
Friends, family, associates and colleagues often refer to
Duncan as a “musical genius.” He possesses an amazing
ability to capture a desired mood perfectly no matter what
the genre of music. The way he explains it is quite interesting.
Duncan says. “Despite having been in the mainstream
music industry and the gaming industry, the advertising
industry is where I truly belong and feel most comfortable. It
feels as if I have lived 1,000 years with each 100 year period
in a different musician’s body from a different musical genre
or era. I love all types of music and I guess that is one of the
reasons why I am so comfortable writing and producing so
many different styles of music.”
