Fox’s reality show “On the Lot” features
up-and-coming filmmakers who are trying
to score a million dollar movie deal, and
although the action is all Hollywood, there’s
no stopping Detroit from making a cameo.
Metro-Detroit based Yessian was involved
in the sound design of director Carolina
Zorilla de San Martin’s 60-second comedy,
“Deliver Me.” The film, about a mother who
can’t seem to put her cell phone down – even
when giving birth – featured Yessian sound
designer Jeff Dittenber’s take on delivery
room pandemonium.
The relationship between Yessian and Zorilla
de San Martin, who is also a well-known
commercial director, was forged with the help
of Susan Munro, a creative editor at Red Car
(Los Angeles). It all started while the team
worked on the film “First,” starring, written
and directed by “24’s” D. B. Woodside.
“I’ve had a relationship with Susan for quite
some time,” says Yessian executive producer
Michael Yessian. “Jeff and I and our composer
Chris Plansker went out to L.A., and that was
our introduction as far as doing any film work
with Susan. After that, she gave me a call and
asked if we wanted to do the sound design for
[“Deliver Me”], and of course we wanted to.”
The turnaround time for the completion of
the 60-second film was short – only one week
– but Dittenber’s experience working with
Zorilla de San Martin was actually marked by
freedom and experimentation, which fit in well
with his “custom” approach.
“She was really into allowing me to have
a lot of creative freedom, so I basically had
free reign,” says Dittenber. “She gave me her
original direction, but she really allowed me to
experiment. I try to go as custom as possible
and then whatever is lacking, I’ll find that in
the libraries we have, but mostly it’s custom
stuff.”
The sound design was so custom, in fact,
that Dittenber’s own two-month-old made
an appearance in the mix. “At the end of
the clip, once the baby is delivered and it’s
crying,” he says, “I sampled my son.”
Zorilla de San Martin was voted off the
program during the May 29 episode, but as
she returns to her successful commercial
career, her relationship with Yessian is sure
to continue. “I’ve talked with her over email,
and we’re definitely going to keep in
touch,” says Dittenber. “She’ll be giving us
a call in the future.”
