Secret Ingredient In KFC’s
‘Life Tastes Better’ Campaign Is DeepMix

To Launch a new “formula” for music use in its new campaign
for KFC, DraftFCB called upon DeepMix – a Hollywood music supervision company
– to both search for and create original elements for the TV-like soundtrack.
“The campaign features a recurring cast of characters you will see throughout
the year in different situations. Instead of a traditional brand anthem, we put
together more of a movie trailer that introduces the characters and brings to
life the line ‘Life Tastes Better with KFC,’” said Tom O’Keefe, Executive Creative
Director for DraftFCB. “From the people, products and situations to the music
and graphics, we are moving the brand to a more contemporary place while still
staying true to its great heritage.”
DeepMix called upon Marc and Steffan
Fantini – the award-winning composers
of the hit CBS drama – Criminal Minds, to
create an original piece utilizing the new
tagline. In addition, tracks by Danny Saber
of Black Grape fame and artist Rob Laufer
were licensed and fused into the eclectic
music mix.
In a new spot set to break on April 16, “Biology,” a new release from artist Andrew
Morgan, was licensed. “We have enjoyed working on these spots which really map
out a musical tone and direction for the entire campaign,” said Dave Curtin, Music
Supervisor and Partner at DeepMix. “They want to brand KFC musically as well
as visually. There will be more songs licensed for upcoming spots and possibly a
compilation CD released digitally,” said Curtin. “There are all kinds of opportunities
ahead for KFC and the bands we pull in that speak to the brand.”

ROKKAN Gets Gnarly For Gnarls
Bicoastal full-service interactive agency ROKKAN creates the newest site from
acclaimed producer Danger Mouse and the uber talented Cee-Lo Green who
collectively make up Gnarls Barkley (http://www.gnarlsbarkley.com/). Their 2008
album, “The Odd Couple,” takes the quirky relationship between the two to the
next level. ROKKAN created a site that reflects the dynamic nature of the artists
and album. With so much going into music these days in addition to beats and
lyrics, it was important to capture personality. The site needed to have the ability
to relay Gnarls Barkley’s standout qualities and carry their personas across the
digital space. Color and functionality were the major components ROKKAN kept
in mind when designing this space.
Taking Gnarls’ amazing sound and oftentimes humorously animated relationship
to the digital space allowed for ROKKAN to create an environment that was a
departure from reality. The site uses funky characterizations of the duo and bright
saturated colors to emulate this distorted world where the user can interact,
watch, listen and learn about a true mark on pop culture. In order to embrace
all things Gnarls, ROKKAN wanted to show off everything promoting this album
from the hilarious videos, news, and updates.
Gnarls’ sound is like a departure from reality. The use of color, imagination, and
an overall fantastical feeling were the all-encompassing goals ROKKAN kept
in mind while crafting this space. By using colors that were super saturated
and morphing Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse into whimsy, bubbly characters, the
tone for the album was set. The pair’s innovative sound and notoriety made the
project that much more rewarding. The site is a fun quirky destination and truly
reflects the persona that is Gnarls Barkley.
