The Center for Health and the Global Environment at
Harvard Medical School released a 10-minute educational
film creatively titled “Once Upon a Tide” at the Smithsonian’s
National Museum of Natural History on March 20. The film
strives to impart the message that all life on Earth, including
our own, depends on the ocean. The film was produced
for aquariums and learning centers throughout the United
States and internationally. Although educational in nature,
the producers sought to impart its message using highly
creative techniques, blending live action and animation,
reality and fantasy, and employing the art of storytelling.
Narrated by Academy Award-winner Linda Hunt, the film
tells the story of a spell that has been cast that has caused
everyone to forget about the importance of the ocean.
The story follows one little girl as she journeys to the sea,
accompanied by a magical shell, and learns how to break
the spell. LAIKA Director Gesine Krätzner created and
designed all the animation on the project.
The film is part of the Center’s “Healthy Ocean, Healthy
Humans” project – a project aimed at helping people
understand the human health connections to the marine
environment. The film was produced by Sea Studios
Foundation (Monterey, Calif.), LAIKA/house (Portland, Ore.),
and Funjacket Enterprises (San Mateo, Calif.) and benefited
from a team of advisors that included prominent scientists
and educators. The film was made possible with support
from The Campbell Foundation, Johnson & Johnson, and
the Massachusetts Environmental Trust, among others.
