This year’s International Broadcast Convention
(IBC) was held Sept. 7-11 in Amsterdam. Chicago
post house Optimus sent traveling companions
Knox McCormac (Director of Operations),
and Craig Leffel (Senior Colorist) to survey the
offerings.
“It’s always a great trip” says Leffel. “We look
forward to it every year because it’s a chance to
look at the post-production market from a global
perspective. You can’t get that anywhere else.”
As opposed to NAB, IBC brings far more
conventioneers from around the world. The
larger show is spread out over a week, is less
crowded and attracts people from every corner
of the industry. There are 12 different halls where
manufacturers present their latest wares.
Spending most of their time in the postproduction
hall, McCormac and Leffel felt like they
could just “drop by” a booth and have quality oneon-one
time with a salesman or developer.
“We’ve got a spectacular new audio room
getting ready to come online at Optimus,” says
McCormac. “When we stopped by the ProTools
booth – unannounced – we were able to walk
right up to the new Icon console, sit down with
an engineer and get an in-depth demo. A handson
walk-through introduced us to the newest
features, preparing us for our brand new audio
system.”
“We even managed to step into the RED One
booth without an appointment,” says Leffel. “We
took our time and got the complete lowdown on
the new RED camera and its workflow.”
Being the techno-geeks they are, both enjoyed
the IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) and Mobile
TV displays. IPTV is coming fast to the U.S.,
and the pair says it was great to see 100
different manufacturers no one has ever heard
of presenting new ideas on how it can be done.
“Every year I try to get as many people as
humanly possible to go,” says Leffel. “They just
have no idea what they’re missing.” Next year’s
IBC will be held Sept. 12-16 in Amsterdam.
