Most major advertising markets have an
awards show. Here in Detroit, we had the
Caddys. And although we don’t have them
any more, this year the D Show promises
to bring about a new era in the recognition
of creativity in the D.
Of the change from the Caddys to the
D Show, Bill Ludwig, vice chairman, CCO
of Campbell-Ewald and the chairman of
the D Council (made up of representative
from across Detroit’s creative community)
includes this statement as part of his lengthy
“Chairman’s Message” on the D Show’s
website:
“After discussions with several agencies,
clients and production companies we found
many very disgruntled with the state of the
Caddys,” he says. “It was no longer a good
representation of the creative excellence that
we produce in our proud city of Detroit.
Therefore, the Caddy Award Show and the
DCDC are gone.”
So, if the Caddys were an unfit representation
of what Detroit’s creative community has to
offer, how is the D Show going to stack up?
Ludwig says the best way to evaluate this year’s
submissions is to take a look at the way the outof-town
judges reacted to them.
“’I’m blown away.’ ‘I had no idea the breadth
and variety of accounts.’ ‘This is the best local
show I’ve ever judged,’” he says. “And these are
direct quotes.”
Ludwig attributes the strength of the
submissions in this year’s D Show, in part, to
the breadth and depth of account types and
account sizes that are represented in Detroit,
as well as the fact that the “Craft” category has
been opened up to non-commercial entries.
Photographers, musicians, illustrators, etc.,
can now submit work that was done for
themselves and not for their clients.
This year, however, not as many noncommercial
submissions were received as
Ludwig had anticipated. He says that hopefully,
in years to come, the awards will draw entries
more heavily from outside of the advertising
world and will be a better representation of
“creativity in all forms of communication and
all forms of expression.”
And although the usual suspects will
always be present (most likely in the form of
big-budget automotive advertising), if the D
Show takes form the way the D Council and
the Detroit community envision, the awards
will be the best possible representation of
the creativity and talent this region has to
offer, and years from now, people will be
asking, “What were the Caddys?”
