Not Your Typical Day At The Office
Groove Addicts Mixes Nightmare And Reality For Sega
Groove Addicts (Los Angeles) once again proves its mettle
in gaming promotion, creating hair-raising music and sound
design for the darkly effective “File Room,” a commercial for
Sega’s popular zombie-slaying video game “Condemned
2: Bloodshot” out of Duncan/Channon, San Francisco.
Groove Addicts composers Kaveh Cohen and Michael
Nielsen – who previously collaborated on the score for
upcoming Ubisoft release of “Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell:
Conviction,” as well as Groove Addicts’ “Full Tilt” scoring
series – provided the musical track for the grisly spot.
Groove Addicts’ Jonathan Miller provided menacingly
realistic sound design for the 30-second commercial.
File cabinets oozing tar and flickering neon lights are just a
few of the early indications that this file clerk might need to
run. When the half-dead zombie and Groove’s creepy score
make their dramatic entrance, it’s official: man down.

Stephen Arnold Music Scores For ESPN
Stephen Arnold Music, an award-winning music production
company based in Dallas, scored big recently with projects
for Comcast and ESPN. With over 15 years of success, the
company’s approach to sonic branding blends original
music compositions with distinct tones and special audio
effects.
Music for CN8 - a Comcast cable television station serving
most of the northeast, including 12 states and 20 television
markets - was composed on guitar by Arnold himself in
Santa Fe using digital performer composing software and
Radar’s 48 track hard disc recording system.
”They wanted us to create very fresh, contemporary tracks
that reflect the indie music sounds of today,” said Arnold.
“So we cut the tracks album style, simultaneously with live
drums, bass, and guitars. While each track is different, they
all have a similar sound, much like different songs by the
same band.”
The package for ESPN, which consists of musical IDs and
teases, was developed for ESPN Outdoors, a collection
of shows on ESPN2 airing Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Stephen Arnold Music created organic tracks that highlight
the beauty of the outdoors with a signature that builds to
a grand ending. Arnold served as composer, with creative
direction by Chad Cook and recording and mix by Paul
West.

Wheeler Audio Creates Original Score For Time Warner Cable
Motion graphics have been all the rage lately for TV spots.
There are many reasons why – no on-camera talent to cast
and shoot, a faster turn-around for tight schedules and
the ability to create enticing visuals specific to the brand.
So when Bernstein Rein (Kansas City, Mo.) producer John
Pace and creative director Kirk Kirkpatrick needed to polish
their series of Time Warner Cable spots with some original
music, they had to look no further than music powerhouse
Wheeler Audio (Kansas City, Mo.).
With Jim Wheeler at the engineering and mixing helm,
composer Walter Bryant composed and performed a
custom-made track for each spot. Although every
commercial has a similar musical core for campaign
continuity, there were elements exclusive to each spot. And
because the music was “synth-driven,” Bryant was able to
respond to all of the changes on the fly in the studio. This
kept the project on its tight schedule and within budget.

Yessian Plays A Game Of “Spy Hunter” For Pontiac
Yessian (Detroit) created the music and sound design for the
launch of the new Pontiac G8 ad via Leo Burnett/Detroit.
Yessian’s contribution of music and sound effects included
a cover version of the theme for the popular “Peter Gunn”
TV series as well as the epic “Spy Hunter” video game from
the early ‘80s. The commercial debuted during the opening
of the NCAA March Madness basketball games.
The spot opens to the original video game “Spy Hunter,”
with several cars in the infamous street scene. The cars are
zipping in and out of traffic, when suddenly the back of a
semi opens and out comes a live-action Pontiac G8. The
G8 races against other cars and out-paces all of them,
showing the power of the Pontiac G8’s engine. The “Peter
Gunn” theme music from Yessian set against the video
game feel of the ad demonstrates a refreshing concept for
automotive advertising.
Yessian’s music was skillfully tailored for the cover of the TV
theme music in a remix/big band fashion, with composer
Michael Schmidt creating the score. The fast-paced
computerized visual effects perfectly complement the
energetic music score, bringing 20- to 30-year-olds back to
their arcade days.
‘Spy Hunter’ was my favorite game growing up,” said
executive producer Michael Yessian. “The day this project
started, I went straight home to find my old Nintendo!”
