Trends in humor last only as long as they are surprising. Once
the humor becomes predictable, then it’s time to move onto
something else. The next big trend will be the return of really
bad puns (delivered as ironically as possible, of course).
MA/MEAGHER: I never really thought that was a trend.
Maybe it is, and I am just unaware. If I had to guess, I would
say that creatives are getting better and more inventive at
appealing to viewers on a more human level. We’ve all been
in awkward situations. Maybe it’s the Larry David effect.
ELEMENT 79: Isn’t a pause by definition at least a tiny bit
awkward? It’s also a big part of timing. And timing, as
standup comedians have known since standup caveman
comedians, is everything. So, yes. The awkwardness will
continue.
Or maybe there are just an awful lot of ‘Family Guy’ fans
in the business. That show has pretty much raised awkward

situations where neither of you agree?
BROMLEY: It is physically and mentally impossible to spend

MA/WITTICH: Bob and I don’t have too many disagreements
when it comes to the work – I think we generally share a
common sense of what’s good and bad. When occasionally
we do disagree, it’s important to stay honest and not let
egos get in the way. If there’s still no resolution, the creative
director can always provide an objective perspective (and
a convenient cop-out).
MA/MEAGHER: What I like about working with Pat is that we
tend to think similarly, yet at the same time we each bring
different ideas.
ELEMENT 79: Some disagreement between partners is a good
thing. If you both always agreed on everything, it’d get
pretty boring. And I bet the work would, too. That’s the whole
point of successful teams anyway – that together you do
better work than you would alone, or with a different partner.
The trick is to stay open to what your partner is saying and
thinking. It’s really not about who’s right and who’s wrong. It’s
more about who’s got the best way to get the best work.
