Forget flowers and candy! On February 12, just
in time for Valentine’s Day, the Writers Guild
of America (WGA) gave all of us a much more
long-lasting treat – it voted unanimously to end
its 100-day strike that began on November 5 of
last year and send its writers back to work.
As I reported in SCREEN’s November 12 issue,
the reasons for the strike dealt heavily in unfair
payment – specifically, and I quote myself, “better
residual payment for
new media avenues
like webisodes and
compensation for
DVD sales.” When
this story ran, the
threat of a strike
was only a potential,
however.
“The strike is over.
Our membership
has voted, and
writers can go back
to work,” said Patric M. Verrone, president of the
Writers Guild of America, West, in a press release.
“This was not a strike we wanted, but one we
had to conduct in order to win jurisdiction and
establish appropriate residuals for writing in new
media and on the Internet. Those advances now
give us a foothold in the digital age. Rather than
being shut out of the future of content creation
and delivery, writers will lead the way as TV
migrates to the Internet and platforms for new
media are developed.”
Congrats, writers! Way to stick it to the
man! And thank you for bringing back “The
Office” (in early April) and saving us from the
downward spiral of reality TV (what the hell was
“Crowned?!”)
I’d like to end my little commentary with a quote
I found in the February 13 Los Angeles Times
Opinion section (online, of course, and via the
WGA website) that I think summarizes the way
most of us felt during that bleak time.
In “What I Did During The Strike,” WGA
member and former striker Linda Teverbaugh
(“The Drew Carey Show,” “Almost Perfect,”
“Who’s the Boss”) says, “I ended up with
laryngitis, then conjunctivitis (something flew in
my eye at Warner Bros.), cystitis (no bathroom
near Universal) and sinusitis (medical mystery).
Which is how I’ll remember the Strike of ‘07-‘08
— solidarity and antibiotics.”
Having just come out of the throes of bronchitis
myself, Linda, so will I.
